We Need Committed Role-Models To Sacrifice For Nigeria – Okey Eze

    By Geoffrey Kingsley

In a bid to honour the labour of our hero who collapsed and died of congestive heart failure in the 77th minute of a world cup qualifying match against Angola at the National Stadium Lagos on the 12th of August 1989, 2015 governorship aspirant under the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, and Chief Executive Officer of Okechukwu Theodore Ezeh Foundation (OTEF), commissioned the inaugural match of Sam Okwaraji Memorial Football Tournament at the Sam Okwaraji Sports Complex in Orlu last Saturday.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Mr. Okey Eze who gave an inspirational account of his relationship with the late football legend noted that the tournament is aimed at discovering young football talents throughout the 27 local government area of Imo state as exceptional talent during the competition will be groomed by international football trainers who have natured team like Galatazary to further enhance their talents in the international space.
The benefactor described late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji as an icon, an international brand, a lawyer who had a master’s degree in international law with pedigree and high repute, pointing-out that Nigeria today is in need of committed role models like the late legend who is willing/ready to sacrifice for the country to move forward.
While admonishing youths in Imo state to shun violent agitation and other social-vices, Mr. Okey Eze urged them to take advantage of their talent as a tool against the current recession as he revealed that the tournament will be an annual tournament.

  • Circumcision As Our Problem In Imo House Of Assembly?

    By Cyril Aririguzo,
    08144444680

The year 2015 has been very phenomenal in the political history of Imo state given that it was one year the political activities dominated the sphere that saw the emergence of new crop of Lawmakers into the state Houses of Assembly. It is also of note that the election from a critical analysis by many political pundits is believed to have given birth to a lot of “Baby lawmakers” that are ill-equipped and inexperienced in legislative matters. Many of them from findings have continued to be bench warmer not able to pass a single bill till date. Even when they attempt to come with one, it is usually a controversial one that shows how inexperienced many are when it comes to deep analytical thinking.
We have come to discover also that most of their bills are unable to impact meaningfully on the life of the people. This lack of basic intellectual capacity to formulate bills for our common good has been identified as a log in the wheel of progress of our state. It has also continued to reflect negatively on our polity as a serious democratic clime when proper evaluation is made on the content of our democracy. We all know the job of a legislator in the House of Assembly requires a whole lot of intellectual work given the significance of the honorable house and its attachment to the daily survival of our state and our nascent democracy. Lack of quality representation in the Houses of Assembly has been identified as being responsible for the decline in the formulation and passage of good bills that can stand the test of time, as well checkmate the excesses of the executive arms of government and ultimately better the lives of people.
A situation where ill-equipped lawmakers that are unable to research and deliberate on what would impact on the society at this critical time of harsh economic crises is worrisome and big concern as it gives an insight into what to expect at the end of the day. Insensitivity and not digging deep on issues properly before embarking on it shows how shallow minded our hollowed chambers are when it comes to issues of importance. I should be blunt in making this assertion because recently, a bill for a law to prohibit that act of female circumcision and other related issues was reported to have been passed for second reading in the House. It was reported in Newspoint Newspaper of Monday October, 31, 2016. The bill which is being sponsored by a member of Mbaitolu State Constituency, Hon Ifeanyi Nnataraonye and eleven others when passed into law, will make a punishable offence for anybody to circumcise female children or separate the genital surgically. With the bill it will also be crime to touch and infibulate the whole or any part of the labia majora or minora of the clitoris of a female. From that angle, any of such acts will be termed as an offence of female genital mutilation. It also specifies that any adult who willingly submit herself for the performance of circumcision shall be guilty of the offence of genital mutilation as described in sub section (1) of the bill. Punishment according to the bill ranges from three(3) to fourteen (14) years imprisonment.
Before now, I know the primary duty of any responsive legislator is to enhance and articulate people oriented bills at all time with the mindset to help the citizenry. More so, with the societal decadence and poverty that have permeated our society already only an articulate legislator can muster enough courage to be different, by rising above the status quo to make big difference, not play to the gallery of not compromising with the evil in the world, by upholding forthrightly the tenets of good knowledge of what the people need and not to propagate a strange and unpopular matter just for the fun of it. I know the primary cause of this kind of development from my understanding as an objective writer, may not be farfetched. I will not want to dabble into that because of space, but will certainly do it at an appropriate time. The main purpose of this article therefore, is to juxtapose and evaluate to the much I can the recent bill as passed by our state law makers, looking at the direct implication in the order of priority. The bill as being read for a second time has set tongues wagging on the real intention of the promoters and their seeming naivety on culture and tradition of the Ndigbo.  The bill perhaps may have been another ploy to demonize our society with absurdity and wolf crying when nothing is going wrong. Any reasonable person that has knowledge of Igbo culture knows our traditional practice is flawless and eternal. Such obnoxious bill is completely irrelevant in our Igboland of today, except the promoters are faking ignorance and deception. The content of the bill may just be mere rehearsal of a script written long ago in illusion, an idea to grab foreign grants, from international donor agencies promoting such ideas. It is an old boring folk tales which many of us know have expired. It has also exposed the level of intelligence of the promoters.
In Imo State, our cultural orientation as Igbo that embraced the love and gospel of Jesus Christ from a holistic view has never treated our daughters, sisters and wives badly to warrant our legislators to seek to drown in the water of controversies at this critical moment believing to win the heart of Imo people as doing the right things. This is failure of a society in need of good governance, it’s obvious that the intension of the promoters may not be genuine, giving that our state may have zero cases of mutilation of genitals. We live in a society where families understand the need to prevent promiscuity and promote good upbringing early in life.  We all know what is right and will continue to do it. Our society is preserved by an orderly practice, and issues of genital mutilation are only predominant in the northern part of Nigeria where the practice reigns supreme. How can our honorable members descend so low and force us to join northern Nigeria in an issue that is inconsequential. Are they trying to intimidate parents? Their reason for this controversial bill is that Female Genital Mutilation causes infection and prevents women from enjoying sex. But who has complained to the House that circumcision gave her infection? Which Imo woman has complained that female circumcision has prevented her from having or enjoying sex?
What could have been more honorable to do than playing the ostrich? Why not promote bills that will enhance wealth creation, generate employment for our graduates, promote good healthcare delivery system, promote entrepreneurial skills, food production that can guarantee food security. Bills seeking to reduce poverty and achieve Millennium development goals will be a step to the right direction. Bills that will remove mediocrity and favoritism in the civil service will be super. Bills seeking to integrate people with disabilities and stamp out unwholesome discrimination against them will be laudable. Bills seeking to project and promote good conduct in the way of doing government business and that of the private sectors in the state will be appreciated. Bill seeking to promote transparency in the award of contracts in government agencies and ministries can impact on the society. Bills on quick dispensation of justice in our courts to decongest the prisons will not only be appreciated but applauded. Bill on the maintenance of our roads and other public utilities will be a memorable one. Bill on the reactivation of our moribund industries will be a good one to start. Bills seeking to promote the payment of pensions and gratuities will be hailed. Bills seeking to promote a clean environment and tourism capacity of the state will be evergreen. Bills seeking to address abuse of human right, abuse of public funds by government officials, abuse of young children and the use of drugs in the rural areas will be the best of them all. We can go on and on with a long list of bills that can be useful.
I will suggest the House of Assembly backs down on the bill on female circumcision and substitute it with a more honorable  and important ones to win the heart of the people and not to be seen as people who are not focused that has nothing to offer. Except something is done the people may continue to see the Imo House of Assembly as not feeling the pulse of the people.

  • Ex-Eagles Star Benedict Akwuegbu Joins Mighty Jets Management

Ex-Eagles Star Benedict Akwuegbu Joins Mighty Jets Management

Former Super Eagles star Benedict Akwuegbu has been appointed on the management board of Nigeria National League side Mighty Jets.

The stocky striker in his hey days who is an indigene of Mbaise nation in Imo State has at some point sort for an appointment into management of now relegated Heartland Football Club of Owerr between 2011 and 2012 and was along side other ex-internationals named as board members of the club by Governor Roachas Okorocha although they never functioned.

  • More Confusion Over National Sports Festival

More Confusion Over National Sports Festival

Certainly there are still no clear indications that the much postponed National Sports Festival (NSF) will hold by the first quarter of next year as earlier stated by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung.
The festival which was originally billed to take place in Calabar, the Cross River capital in 2014 has suffered several postponements; a development that forced the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung to threaten to stage the games in Abuja by the first quarter of next year.
Apart from the several excuses being given by Cross Rivers, another issue that got Dalung upset was when the state reportedly requested the federal government through the sports ministry to give it the sum of N650 million naira to enable it put finishing touches to its preparations.
But a reliable source at the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) told sports Vanguard that till date the administration is yet to get any communication from the Ministry of Youth and Sports concerning the hosting of the games in Abuja.
According to our source who pleaded anonymity, the projection of Dalung that the NSF will take place in the first quarter may not be feasible because by the beginning of the year what the agencies will be battling with is the budget which may dovetail to the second quarter.
“We at the FCT administration have heard the sports minister over the media talking about the sports festival taking place in Abuja by the first quarter of next year. But from my years of experience, there is a very high possibility that it may not be able to hold by that time because that is the time we will be pursuing the budget and approvals.
“It is obvious that Cross River State is not ready to host the festival. Remember that they were originally billed to host in 2014, they later pushed it to 2015 and now in 2016 they started asking the Sports Ministry for N650 million. All I know is that the festival can only hold by the first quarter of next year if they have kept the money for that.”

  • HEARTLAND FC Must Not Die Part 2 – Ohakim

HEARTLAND FC Must Not Die Part 2 – Ohakim

Then under Governor Ikedi Ohakim from 2007, Professor Nnamdi Obiaraeri Commissioner for Youths and Sports rejuvenated the Heartland FC management and made it gun for continental honours. The ebulent Professor of law brought in prominent Imo sons philanthropists, technocrats to help raise fund for the club. He did well to make management of the club become the interest of the Governor who provided all their needs. Heartland FC became the toast of the best players in the league and monies were provided to procure the best for the team. Heartland paraded the strongest squad under Ohakim. See team list; Goalkeepers; Augustine Brown, Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa. Defenders; Adama A Odey, Chinedu Efugh, Emmanuel Olowo, Joseph Eyimofe, Joseph Jonny Jackson, Kennedy Chiwo, Kingsley Udoh, Orji Okagbue, Peter Ambrose, Thankgod Ike. Midfielders; Bill Sherif, Damian Udeh, Elvis Kingsley, Emmanuel Omodiagbe, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, Julius Ubido, Onyekachi Okoye, Philip Obhufuoso, Stanley Okoro. Forward/Strikers; Bello KofarMata, Chibuzor Ozurumba, Emeka Nwanna, Emeka Onouha, Emmanuel Nwachi, John Owoeri, Joshua Obaje, Okechukwu Nwadike, Signs Chibambo.
The team was highly motivated under a very professional management. And in 2008, Heartland FC finished second in the Premier League thereby earning the clubs teaming supporters a return to continental football.
Under Ohakim Heartland FC had a good run and campaign at the CAF Continental Championship. They beat Black Stars 4-0 and in return leg they beat them 1-6. They beat FAR Rabat 3-1 in Owerri and in Morroco they drew them 1-1. They beat Cotton Sport 2-1 and in return leg drew them 1-1. They lost 0-2 to TP Mazembe and beat them 3-1 in return leg in Owerri. They beat Monomotapa 3-1 and lost 2-1 to them in return leg to qualify for the Semi Final Stage where they drew fellow Nigerian side, Kano Pillars. Governor Ohakim gave Heartland FC massive support, such that it became the pride of Nigeria at the continental level after Enyimba FC reigns of the 20s. In the battle for the Semi Final ticket, the highly motivated Heartland FC team defeated Kano Pillars by 4-0 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri on Sunday, 4th October, 2009. What they thought would be an easy ride in Kano proved to be tricky, as Governor Ohakim’s Kano counterpart and the entire northern part of the country, threw their weight behind their team who were already 4-0 down to Heartland FC on aggregate. Kano Pillars did everything to upturn the Heartland FC advantage, but that was not going to be as the then Governor of Imo state threw a good showing by leading a high powered Imo State contingent comprising both government officials, regular fans and Imo citizens who yearned for the long awaited continental trophy.
On Saturday 10th October, 2009 Heartland were in Kano to play Kano Pillars at the SaniAbacha Stadium right at the heart of Kano City. To watch the CAF Champions Leagues Semi Finals were the two governors, Ibrahim Shekarau (host) of Kano State and IkediOhakim (guest) of Imo State. The two-goal hero in the first leg semi-final a week ago at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Uche Agba, grabbed the winner a minute from time with a stunning shot from over 25 yards, which bounced in front of a diving goalkeeper Theophilus Joel before resting at the back of the net. The all-Nigerian clash was halted for about 10 minutes mid-way through the second half when disappointed Kano fans threw missiles into the pitch and then attacked their Heartland FC visiting rivals. Governor Ohakim’s security guards scrambled to shield him with hands and suits from the stones and objects being thrown by the Kano fans because the too good a team had beaten Pillars in their own backyard? One witness remembered Governor Ohakim yelling at MallamShekarau saying, “call your people to order and I will not leave this stadium without my boys”.
The whole Stadium laid siege on the Governors Imo State contingent and threatened to burn all their vehicles and buses with the players and fans. All persuasion by the security to evacuate Governor Ohakim fell on deaf ears as he insisted on leaving with the entire Imo state contingent and the victorious HeartlandFC players and crew. They were kept at the stadium till late in the evening at 8pm. The Governor Ohakim team put a serious call to Abuja and a heavy detachment of Mobile Police, Military and DSS stormed the city centre with tear gas and the whole chaos was settled. Governor IkediOhakim left that stadium with the Heartland team bus to their hotel. MallamShekarauapologised to Ikedi, and sorted out the team bills and promised that no more harm will occur to them.
To play TP Mazembe in Lumumbashi after a 2-1 victory in Owerri, the President approved a Presidential fleet to convey the Owerri high contingent to motivate the players and bring back the trophy. Governor Ohakim led a strong contingent comprising Imo government officials, Federal Government/NFF and press to watch the CAF Champions League 2nd Leg finals live at Lubumbashi, Congo DR with. TP Mazembe. The home side just needed a lone goal to win that game. The hostility against this team was glaring, right from reception they gave the delegation to the manner they threw everything at the HeartlandFC team. According to a witness, the only thing that wasnt thrown at them was the kitchen sink. President Kabila was at that Stadium, and seated to his left was Governor IkediOhakim.
Close source reported how Ohakim while exchanging pleasantries with President Kabila told the Nigerian Ambassador to Congo DR that Nigeria’s President had asked him never to return to Nigeria without the trophy, and the men all had a good laugh. President Kabila retorted when the message was interpreted to him in French that the Congo DR that his people has asked him to resign if the trophy leaves for Nigeria. Another round of laughter erupted. Game ended 1-0 with HeartlandFC losing the trophy. Governor Ohakim felt like shedding tears on a strange land, but as a leader, he summoned courage to uplift his team and contingent.
Ohakim still made sure the players and management smiled home despite not brining the trophy home and the next season they came second again, losing out on the League trophy. HeartlandFC ended the CAF campaign with UcheAgba ending up as 4th highest goal scorer with six goals. The duo of Ike ThankGod and Stanley Okoro made the CAF Champions League top scorers with three goals apiece.
Where did we get it wrong? Wait for Part 3

  • Saints Keep Marching at Manchester City

Saints Keep Marching at Manchester City

Southampton may not yet be the same animal under manager Claude Puel as they were under his predecessor, Ronald Koeman, but the Saints’ early progress this season has been about as good as can be expected.
OptaJoe noted that, in particular, defence has been at a premium at St. Mary’s so far this season, having seen a terrific defensive record come to an end in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Burnley:
Charlie Austin was the hero on that day, thanks to his two goals, and the Englishman now has six in his last six games as he prepares to make the daunting trip to Manchester City.
While a clean sheet escaped them, Southampton did demonstrate a huge amount of attacking desire against Burnley, although Puel is keen to see more accuracy in front of goal, per the Daily Mail’s Sam Cunningham:
Thankfully for the Saints, City have a Wednesday night meeting against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, a fixture that could distract the Citizens enough to affect their focus next Sunday.
Combined with the Saints’ defensive scrutiny and the fact that City manager Pep Guardiola has drawn and lost in his last two Premier League outings, Southampton have the potential to extend that winless streak at the Etihad.
    Prediction: Manchester City 1-1 Southampton

  • Federation Cup Finalists Emerge

    Federation Cup Finalists Emerge

A historical final in Nigeria’s oldest football competition, the Federation Cup awaits football fans. Nasarawa United made it through to the final after shocking Enyimba 1-0. The Solid Miners are in the finals for the first time in their history after reaching the semi-final 3 times. They Nnewi based side FC IfeanyiUbah who are also appearing in the final for the first time ever defeated lethal second tier club, Crown FC to make the historical feat.
    Road to the Final
Nasarawa United proved to be resilient as they bounced from a disappoint start to the league campaign and an awful outing in the continent to reach the final stage of the Fed. Cup. They walked over Abuja FC in the premilinary stage of the Cup.

Nasarawa United 3-0 FC Abuja (walk over)
    Nasarawa United 1-0 Go-round FC
    Nasarawa United 1-0 Dynamite FC
Nasarawa United 4-2 Akwa United (Pen)
    Nasarawa United 1-0 Enyimba Int’l

Coach Kabir Dogo had led the Lafia based club to two Fed. Cup outing and is playing the final on his second attempt.
FC IfeanyiUbah’s goal before the football season began was, amongst other things, to secure a continental ticket. Apparently they have lost a continental spot by virtue of the league standing, this heaps a lot of pressure on the lads and they are bent of clinching the Cup title that will see them represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup. Their emergence to the final had some controversial undertone. The Anambra Warriors meeting with Katstina United, Warri Wolves and Crown FC had the referees harassed due to alleged bias officiating in favour of FC IfeanyiUbah.

    FC IfeanyiUbah 1-0 Ebonyi Angels
    FC IfeanyiUbah 1-0 Lobi Stars
    FC IfeanyiUbah 2-0 Katsina United.
    FC IfeanyiUbah 1-0 Warri Wolves
    FC IfeanyiUbah 2-1 Crown FC

For a good number of years, the Fed. Cup has dragged on without a sponsor. The panache associated with this competition is on steady decline.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Federation Cup (aka Challenge Cup) is the main football single-elimination tournament in Nigeria. It was created in 1945 as the “Governor’s Cup”,succeeding the War Memorial Challenge Cup that had been limited to teams from Lagos.
