No Nigerian player made the last five of this year’s edition of the African Player of the Year award.
Super Eagles players John Obi Mikel, Ahmed Musa and KelechiIheanacho were named in the 30-man list of players nominated last month by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the African Footballer of the Year 2016.
However, the reigning African Player of the Year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon & Borrusia Dortmund) is in line to retain his gong after making the last five of this year’s edition of the award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) published the list of the final five players on its website.
Also making the last five were Algerian and Leicester City duo of Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani.
CAF said the top five was decided by votes from the members of the CAF Media Committee, CAF Technical & Development Committee and half of the 20-member Panel of Experts (10 persons).
For the final phase, votes from the Head Coaches/Technical Directors of the 54 National Associations affiliated to CAF plus Associate Members, Reunion Island and Zanzibar, together with the other half of the 20-member Panel of Experts (10 persons) will be counted towards the determination of the eventual winners.
The 2016 Glo-CAF Awards Gala sponsored by telecommunication giants, Globacom, will be held on Thursday, 5 January 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria.
